objectives
Candidates will:

• Improve vocabulary, fl uency and listening comprehension to ICAO level 4
• Gain exposure to a wide range of vocabulary terms and expressions associated with fi eld of
aviation
• Engage in a variety of exercises that develop pronunciation, oral fl uency, vocabulary and syntax
• Enrich their vocabulary and knowledge of expressions and discourse markers related to the field
of aviation
Scope of Aviation English Course
To be used in conjunction with English Discoveries Online General English courses for Intermediate
level students aiming to achieve level 4 in the ICAO scale
Comprises approximately 24 learning hours, divided into 3 courses of 8 lessons each
Unit Content:
• Focus on developing listening and speaking skills
• Real-life situations and dialogues drawn from world of aviation
• Focus on key terminology and expressions used in context of aviation
Unit Structure:
• Listening Components – recordings of conversations between pilots and ground staff
accompanied by comprehension questions
• Speaking Components – simulated interactions between pilots and ground staff
• Vocabulary – presentation and practice of specialized vocabulary and expressions
Topics:
• Events and Domains in aerodrome control ICAO list
• Events and Domains linked to en-route air traffi c control ICAO list
• Other Domains ICAO list
Functions:
Units practice the communicative language functions outlined by the ICAO. Dialogues focus on the
following communicative language functions:
• Communicative functions directed towards triggering actions
• Sharing Information
• Management of Pilot-Controller Relation
• Management of the Dialogue
